Rubber wrist bracelets have gained in popularity since 2004 when Lance Armstrong declared his “Livestrong” campaign with yellow, rubber bracelets imprinted with his message of hope. The bracelet has been used to symbolize cancer awareness and cancer research. The wrist bracelets are proclaiming support for a variety of causes and to bring awareness to those same causes. Punk rockers at one time wore o-rings around their wrist as a statement of anti jewelry. Since rubber has practically no value compared to traditional gem encrusted jewelry, it was the rockers show of support for the common man with no wealth or it was just a way to thumb their nose at society in general. Sometimes the rubber wrist bracelets were “gemmed up” with glitter to represent what they believed wealth should be.
